The Concept of CPJ

CPJ(Contemporary Progressive Jazz) is the type of jazz music that is most advanced in rhythm, harmony, and melody.

Akihiko ‘JOKER’ Matsui  is the only CPJ composer, who is also known to be THE real multi-instrumentalist who plays four different instruments(Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Drums)with unprecedented proficiency to improvise through the most complex multi-modal harmony that is harmonically and rhythmically MOST COMPLEX among all the music on the face of the earth.

The music Akihiko ‘JOKER’ Matsui has been creating in the last few decades is called
CPJ(Contemporary Progressive Jazz) because it might be THE only music with

CONTEMPORARY harmony which involves complex vertical harmonic structures such as hybrid chords and poly-chords that still clearly function in horizontal harmony, and also involves horizontal harmonic structures such as multi-modal harmony and multi-tonic harmony which are considered the most frequent functional modulations in harmony, and

PROGRESSIVE rhythms which involves odd meters such as 11/16,13/16,15/16,17/16 and so on, and polyrhythms with sporadic quintuplets and septuplets like 3 over 5, 4 over 5, 7 over 5, 3 over 7, 4 over 7, 5 over 7, and a lot more that can’t easily be described here, and also

JAZZ improvisation which involves complex chord scale inside licks with complex approach notes that goes miraculously complying with all the previously-mentioned exceptionally complex harmonic and rhythmic structures, and once in a while, outlining scales outside the harmony to create temporarily poly-modal but still functional harmony.

It’s the type of music that might easily be mixed up with Free Jazz which easily fled away from all the complex jazz theory and rhythmic precision and complexity, but CPJ is actually the very opposite of Free Jazz that might sometimes be played by people that had started playing the instruments just a year ago. The history of jazz evolution seems to have come to an end and there are a whole heck of a lot of jazzers that tend to stay away from orderly musical situation to capture a different atmosphere simply by playing free jazz, but just moving onto the next step by playing free jazz is the riskiest business in the exploration of cultural evolution, because it can easily lead both the performers and listeners of music to a very lazy thinking that ‘It’s time to destroy the rules of jazz’. Well, it’s always easy to destroy things, but there are still many more ways to let jazz evolve in the same straight forward direction as the history of jazz was pursuing, which is the structural complexity. It’s just that the way the media have been providing mediocre commercial music, have been disabling people in recognizing the possibility of cultural development, and as a result, have been leading people to just pursue instant possibility to appreciate the music that can be understood without any effort. It’s seriously damaging the possible evolution of music!

そして、どうにかわかり易くジャンル名をつけて置いた方がいいということから、CPJ(Contemporary Progressive Jazz)という言葉に行き着きました。

13/7, 11/7, 9/7, 13/5, 11/5, 9/5(book CPJ〜JT094,096)
